Recreation and Conservation
The Town of Pomona Park is located in South Putnam County where there are more trees than people. There are large and small lakes in abundance. The St Johns River passes nearby, creating fabulous boating, fishing and bird watching opportunities. There are many places to hike, swim or lounge in the sun. Check out Putnam Blueways and Trails!
Our area is a bird-watcher's paradise. There are frequent sightings of Sand Hill Cranes, Bald Eagles, Osprey, Swallow Tail Kite, Wild Turkey, many types of Herron, Egret, Ibis, Anhinga, Cormorant, Belted Kingfisher, Bobwhite Quail, Whippoorwills, Wrens, Mockingbird, Blue Jay, several species of ducks, several species of Woodpeckers including the large Pileated Woodpecker, several species of Owls, and several species of Hawks. We also see Flycatchers, Thrush, Ground Dove, Turkey Vultures and Hummingbirds. In the colder months, many sea birds fly inland such as Pelicans and Sea Gulls.
Small and large mammals are abundant, such as Raccoon, Possum, Fox, Rabbit, Armadillo, Deer, Black Bear, Black Panther, Otter, Raccoon and Coyote. Of course, there are also many species of water and land turtles, numerous varieties of fish and alligators. We have a variety of snakes but we do not like to brag on that. However, we have had sightings of the endangered Indigo snake. This area is also famous for harvesting of blue crabs. The famous writer, William Bartram passed through this area and he was very impressed by the flora and fauna of Florida. Major lakes include Lake Broward, Lake Crescent, Lake Stella, Lake Como, Silver Lake and Clear Lake. There are many others.

In addition to conservation lands, we are surrounded by citrus groves, ferneries, vineries, timber land and pasture lands. Wine making began in this area before 1887. This area is known as the "Bass Capital of the World" and "The Fern Capital of Florida". The nearby areas of Mount Royal, Drayton Island and Salt Springs were inhabited by Florida's Indian Tribes as evidenced by archeological finds.
